At less than 80 km (50miles) from the capital Cagliari, Teulada and its 4 000 inhabitants seem to have been forgotten by time. Its 30km coastline is amongst the wildest of the island. Strangely, tourist centres such as Chia and Porto Pino are less than 30 km away… In the past agripastoral activity populated the whole of its 245 km2 territory. Today the mountains of Sulcis Natural Park that surround it are almost uninhabited and contain the vastest Mediterranean forest. There one can see stag, fallow deer, goshawk, Bonelli and king eagles, peregrine hawks, wildcat, etc… Sulcis region is of an extreme geologic richness and diversity, with for instance the cave at Is Zuddas or the sand dunes at Porto Pino. It’s mines placed Sardinia at the centre of international exchange since Neolithic times, first for the obsidian and for metals later, leaving remains of the different civilisations who mixed or followed one another: Nuragic, Punic, Phoenician, Roman, Spanish, etc… These civilisations are marked by the various celebrations in the local calendar |

Teulada in short: Apart from the bank, the post office and the chemist, the village of Teulada offers a number of small shops as well as traditional craft shops making pipes, loom woven materials, rugs, carpets, ceramics and knives and on Mondays there is a market. For food lovers, there are numerous restaurants and « agriturismi » where you can taste the delights of local cooking. In the surroundings, there are routes for pony trekking and horse riding, mountain bike or rambling, with or without a guide. Along the coast there are beaches and a harbour where you can rent rubber inflatable or sailing boats, go for an excursion along the coast in schooner or go diving in the crystal clear waters and undersea splendours … Festivals: Most of them involve processions with local people dressed in regional costume and beautiful carts drawn by oxen…Amongst these are: Carnival, Easter with “Su Scravamentu” “S’Incontru» and Holy Week. Sant'Isidoro patron saint of agriculture (end of may), Nostra Signora del Carmelo, patron saint of the village (16th of July) and, beginning of august, Sagra of the fisherman as well as the Matrimonio Mauritano in the village of Santadi close by. |
