Home description

As you may well understand we consider Serrapetrona a very particular place.
Even though we usually live in Rome, we have the pleasure to go there many, many times all during the year and it is sad and difficult the coming back to Rome.
The two buildings belong to our family from 1950’s and personally had the opportunity to help the masons not only at the beginning, but also during the last recent repairs.
At Serrapetrona we meet kinsfolk and acquaintance, in particular during the summer. So that our “Serra” becomes the place where to find out all our roots.
“Il Granaio” (the barn) has been, in the past, the bailiff’s house and during the years 2005-2006, has been completely restored.
We named the villa “Il Granaio” because, in the past, in the large hall the wheat had been stored, before the grinding.
Our main lay-out has been to realize a building to host, children and friends in a rural framework marked by a wooden-beam ceiling and old raw materials.
The kitchen at the ground floor, restored with an ancient fireplace and old fashioned main wooden girders, are still witnessing the existence of an estate of more than one century absorbed by the building only after 1950’s.
Only the furniture is absolutely up to date.
From the kitchen there is one of the cross to the garden and the swimming pool area park.
The furniture used belong to the family from decennals.
We may only hope of having done our best to give the right charm of the old fashioned way.
The swimming pool area has been realised on July 2006: it is surrounded by green grass and olive trees. It may be used far in the night, due to the electric lighting.
In short, we have worked with the confidence of having modelled a scene agreeable and peaceful.
It has been created to host ns and friends and it is carefully equipped with old family furniture. The house is built to a high standard: 1 large kitchen with fireplace, at the ground floor; 4 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 lounge/sitting room of 80sq m with fireplace and television at the first floor. Il Granaio is placed in a private setting of rolling countryside in the middle of a peaceful mini valley surrounded by olives, firs, laurels, cypresses and a secular oak. It is situated in the village of Serrapetrona with one small shop for basic needs, post office, pharmacy, bank and many restaurant and bars in a range of 7km. The swimming pool (5x10m, shallow end 1,20 m and deep end 2,10m) built in summer 2006 is shared with the owners.

The Marche / Abruzzo region

The history of Serrapetrona
Serrapetrona: the land of a unique, red sparkling wine named “vernaccia”
The village is located in a place-loving position, (500 meters above the sea level) among hills and mountains in the district of Macerata.
The small rural centre lies on a road plentiful of woods and olives trees.
Inhabited since the Iron Age, the village saw the passing of Piceni, Roman, and Longobard eras.
The municipal insignia clearly reports to the town fortification, built to protect the ancient mountain route to Camerino.
It was about 400 years after these periods, that we find the first document with the name of “Serra”, dated back to 1132 A.C.
The outer wall and the S. Clemente’s Church (formerly S. Francesco) date back to this period.
Belong to the XIV century, the innerwal features, the arch-gate, the loopholes and the main entrance that holds the porticulus.
The political life of the inhabitants was governed by statutes well preserved by and in the town hall. These statutes go back to 1473 A.C.
It may be quite interesting to learn that Serrapetrona was governed by the family of Varano (Camerino) and then by the Apostolic See, before the year 1861, when Serrapetrona become part of the Kingdom of Italy.
The positive influence of Varano’s family may be found in a certain number of masterpieces. In the church of San Lorenzo –at Castel S. Venanzo- a significant work by Girolamo di Giovanni is preserved.
It is a matter of “a Jesus on the cross with the Virgin Mary, Magdalene and St. John”; the small church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in the suburb of Serrapetrona built in the 1500s; another work of Lorenzo D’Alessandro as a frescoed niche representing the Virgin Mary, St John and Sebastian.
A magnificent polyptic of particular value, likewise worked by Lorenzo D’Alessandro, is hosted by the church of San Francesco.
On the walls, there are fragment of frescoes, belonging to a different periods. A crucifix made in wood, coming from the monastery of Ventigliano goes back to the XIII century.
A “resurrection of Christ” painted before 1350, attributable to the school of Rimini, is worthy to be mentioned.
As far as the economy of Serrapetrona, is concerned, the same is primarily based on lands products.
These include wine growing and the oenology strictly sparking; due to the fact that seventy years ago its name become linked with that of the name of vernaccia a species of grapevine which produces sparking red wine and a fine grappa.
A restrict and selected number of winegrowers is now focusing the own activities on quality, rather than on quantity. They grow, produce and deal the Vernaccia D.O.C.G. (controlled and guaranteed origin’s denomination) whose qualification are: grape drying and a slow fermentation process, in order to increase both flavour and alcoholic strength.
A wonderful “grappa” with a clean, dry taste is also on sale.
Together with wines, Serrapetrona is largely known also for its fountains of “water” believed to have curative properties.
The region lies on the eastern side of central Italy, between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine mountains and it remains unspoiled by the ravages of mass tourism.
Most of Italy’s Adriatic coastline is flat, except of Monte Conero, a high limestone mountain that plunges into the sea and guards a handful of delightful little bathing resorts. The best of these are Portonovo, Sirolo, Porto Recanati and Numana.
Easily accessible from Ancona to the north, it is a semi-wild area known for its scenery and its production of wines.
The Adriatic coast has been a mecca for "sun n' sand" holiday makers for decades; but few venture far from the beaches. Inland, perhaps more so than anywhere else in central Italy, you will find places where time really has stood still.
The Medieval Towns of Urbino and Ascoli Piceno are the highlights of the region, but the rolling hills of the interior contain an abundance of smaller towns and all undiscovered villages. San Leo, with its dramatic fortress, is one of the best. Most of the countryside is a pretty mixture of woods and remote hills, rising in the west to the majestic Monti Sibillini. Ancona and the attractive town of Pesaro are the pivotal points of the vast coastline.
Many of the smaller inland towns are well worth visiting and most make a good base for touring. These include Jesi, Recanati, Cagli, Camerino, Macerata, Loreto and Sarnano.Caldarola: ‘Giostra del Ie Castella’ Historic representation set in the mid XV century. Sarnano. ‘Palio del Serafino’. Historic representation set between the end of the XIII and the start of the XIV century. It takes place in August and ends on the second Sunday of the month with competitions of Tiro alla Fune (tug-of-war), Corsa delle Brocche, Salita al Palo and Taglio del Tronco.
San Severino’ M. Marche. ‘Palio dei Castelli. Historic representation of the XV century. It takes place in June and finishes on the third Saturday of the month with competitions of Tiro alla Fune (tug-of war), Corsa dei Sacchi (sack races) and Corsa delle Tom.

The display takes place between the last week in August and the first week in September with games in the square: Corsa a piedi (running races), Tiro alla Fune (tug-of-war) and an archery tournament.
Tolentino.‘Sul Ponte del Diavolo’. Historic representation of the XII century; a mix of legend and history about the Ponte del Diavolo. The event takes place between the last Sunday of August and mid September with displays of craft workshops, dance, archery and Giostra dell' Anello (a target jousting game) upon the Ponte Del Diavolo.
Treia.’ La Disfida del Bracciale’. Historic presentation set at the beginning of the nineteenth century that re enacts the Gioco del Pallone col Bracciale; a game of ancient origins that developed greatly in the Renaissance period. Each year the challenge is celebrated on the first Sunday of August, following ten days of celebration that begin on the Friday preceding the last Sunday of July.
Ascoli Piceno 'Giostra della Quintana'- is Medieval Jousting based on a 14th century version which took place in honor of Saint Emidio. Six riders test their horsemanship.First Sunday in August
Visso ‘Torneo delle Guaite’.Historic representation set in XIII century when the Town council of Visso was divided into five guaite. The event takes place at the end of July and ends on the first Sunday in August with archery competitions.
Urbino Superb medieval pageant in the historical heart of this perfect Renaissance town.Third Sunday in August
ANCONA is the capital of Le Marche, mostly known as a modern port, not a tourist town, but it also has an appealing historic town on a hill. From the 11th-century Duomo you can enjoy a wonderful sea view. The art gallery, situated in a historic palazzo, contains works by artists including Titian. Ancona is also the home of the region's archeological museum, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale delle Marche, with exhibits including impressive Roman bronze statues. Your holiday options also include the beach; you can take a bus from the railway station to stretches of beach outside town.
CAMERINO - Poised on a ridge between two river valleys, this small but impressive hill town on the border between central Marche and Umbria boasts not only a bishop but also a university.
MACERATA is another region’s main centres. It is the provincial capital and the city is marketed on its cultural heritage 'una città da vivere tutto l'anno'. Indeed, the highlight of Macerata is 'The Opera' which takes place throughout July and August at the Teatro Lauro Rossi and the Sferisto Arena. The city is fairly new with no real records of the town before the 12th century. It became almost immediately a university city and grew spectacularly. Independent thought was encouraged and it was in the city that the first insurrection or 'Risorgimento' took place.
LORETO is the spiritual town, a legend says that in 1294 the house of the Virgin Mary miraculously uprooted itself from the Holy Land and was brought by angels to Loreto. Each year several pilgrims visit the Santa Casa and its Basilica.
SARNANO - The bustling spa town of Sarnano lies roughly half way between the two provincial capitals of Macerata and Ascoli Piceno. Its waters are claimed to be beneficial for a whole gamut of complaints, including gout, arthritis and liver complaints. The modern town is overlooked by its quiet, rather austere, medieval borgo, topped by two solid towers, which has been left very much alone by the modern-day development.
GETTING AROUND The A14-E55 provides easy access to the coastline resorts. Dual-carriageway spurns from the A14-E55 lead to Jesi, Urbino and Ascoli Piceno, but north-south roads in the interior can be slow. Bus services are generally good, but in the interior can be infrequent. The railway service along the coast is excellent, with a good service through the heart of the region, though it can be slow.

Macerata Serrapetrona area

Not far from Serrapetrona a lot of routes are available to anybody archaeological sites of Roman Age; historical buildings and castles of Middle Age; museums; churches; monasteries etc. In the course of the summer, even 2007, a great number of shows and events is regularly scheduled: the Opera festival in Macerata (Arena Sferisterio);Chamber music and symphony concerts in Camerino; latin comedies in latin language in a roman open air theatre in Urbisaglia; many other popular meetings of relevant interest are also available to those who appreciate the gastronomic specialties. Serrapetrona is moreover well known in Italy and in Europe as place of origin of a special red wine Spumante, named "Vernaccia" DOCG. Cakes, special cheeses, salt pork named 'ciauscolo' are also on sale, with many, many other typical products of the Region. Serrapetrona is also only 35km away from the Sibillini National Park, where walks and paths are usually fairly quiet and not crowded at all. A geological route is available in Genga (Fabriano) with the visit of the Frasassi caves.
In 45 minutes is possible to reach ski runs in Sarnano, Bolognola or Ussita and also the sea side and the golf course at Conero (an 18 hole 5.629 metre championship golf course).
In Tolentino you can also find the Terme spa of Santa Lucia.

Guestbook

perfect family vaccation home
OlB Munich, Germany.
Date Submitted: September 03, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
We spent 3 weeks in August at this beautiful place. As we were travelling with four small children (6 months -6 years), we stayed most of the time in the area and we enjoyed it very much. Serrapetrona and 'il granaio' are beautiful and quiet places, ideal for people who want to relax. The hospitality of the owners Magda and Raoul, staying next door, were amazing, they really made us feel at home.
The house is very clean, well equipped and well maintained, the bed rooms and the living room are very nice and spacious. The only (little) drawback is the kitchen which is quite dark and one of the bathrooms having a tiny shower.
On the other hand the garden and the pool area are perfect: we enjoyed the pool very much which was cleaned on a daily basis by the owner.
Altough the owners are staying next door and had from time to time guests who used the garden as well, we never felt disturbed as they were very discrete.
On the bottom line if you are lookong for quiet and relaxing vaccation combined with warmth of italian hospitality, il granaio is the place to go.
lovely peaceful location

The highlight of Il Granaio is the location combined with the warmth of the owners. It is beautifully quiet, with a large garden and generous accomodation. Raoul and Magda ensured that everything was in order and let us know of local events (and even took us to two excellent 'Sagra's (food & drink festivals). The pool was lovely and though it mentions that it is shared with the owners there was rarely a time that both families were using at the same time. The house was amazingly well equipped and the quality of furnishings / bedlinen etc was high.
The village of Serrapetrona is quiet (a bar, pizzeria, restaurant and a shop) though there are three good sized towns in a 10 - 15 minute drive. There are also some VERY good restaurants in the country 5 - 10 minutes by car.
The only thing that could inprove the house would be a lighter kitchen area (though architecturally this isn't feasable!) though this wasn't an issue for us as we had beautiful weather every day, so we ate outdoors.
Le marche is a beautiful area and its well worth a visit. We'd certainly recommend this house. We were a family of 4 with daughters aged 10 & 12.

As a child I spent most of my summer holidays in this little village lost in the countryside so I was a bit nervous coming back here after so many years with my English wife and anglo-italian children: would they share my excitement and would they love it as much as I did or would they find it dull and uninteresting? I was relieved when after a few days I found everybody enthusiastic about the place. Obviously my opinion is biased but I do think the landscape in this part of Italy is unique with its mixture of hills with cultivated fields and in the distance higher steeper mountains with a wilder scenery.
The “Granaio” is a successful barn restoration project; it is tasteful and has kept its countryside spirit. It is very spacious and comfortable and can easily accommodate 8 people. There is a very large lawn in front of the house and the swimming pool, although not really a traditional part of the scenery, is an added bonus in the hot Italian summer. The kids loved it and the only problem was to get them out to visit the surrounding area. There is lots to visit and see, plenty of small medieval towns on hilltops and if you enjoy country walks there are plenty to do.
The food is excellent and cheap, the best are the small restaurants outside the tourist track; you will not find menus in three languages and you’ll have to cope in Italian but the seafood home made pasta I had there was memorable. The owners (Raoul and Magda) who are keen connoisseurs of Italian cuisine will be able to advise you on good addresses.
So although this was a very special journey back into my childhood I think this is a really great place which should please any country loving person.
5/5 Fabulous house, great location, wonderful owners

We stayed at Il Granaio in May 2008. Aside from the weather, which was a bit more rainy that we are accustomed to for Italy, our stay was fantastic. This house has a great floor plan. There is a huge great room at one end of the upper floor with a door to a long corridor off of which are the bedrooms/baths. The kitchen is downstairs, with doors to the interior stairs and to the outside. So its perfect for early risers/late night revelers to "do their own thing" without disturbing the rest of the party. There is a huge level lawn leading from the covered patio outside the kitchen to the swimming pool. The patio at the pool is lovely, complete with a poolhouse with a full bath and a covered picnic area. Beds/linens/furniture all very comfortable, kitchen very well equipped, all very clean. The owners were tremendously gracious - not only did they have us over to their house for a delicious home-cooked meal, they provided a huge welcome basket with wine, water, homemade cake and yogurt, cheese, bread, fruit, etc etc., and lovely fresh flower arrangements. It was very fun to get to know and interact with real locals, and added something special to our trip. We unfortunately had one sick traveler and the owners went out of their way to help us try to make plans for her early return - letting us use their computer, fax, making copies of our tickets, offering to make a doctor's appointment. We were a group of five, but the house could comfortably hold eight. This would be a particularly good property for families with children, since there is such a nice big yard and pool. The town is quite small and quiet, but has a small grocer, a few cafe/bars, an ATM, a church. I think there is also a small museum but we did not go in. The area is spectacularly beautiful - we often just stopped the car - there is no traffic - to snap photos of the "slendida vista." We went to a medieval festival one night in Camerino, about 20 minutes away, which was great fun. I think we were the only non-locals there. We made day trips to Cingoli, San Ginesio, San Severino, Macerata, Ascoli Piceno, the seaside, Urbino. And we went into Tolentino several times - its about 15 minutes away and has a medium sized Iper grocery store, pharmacies, the train station, two lovely churches, a cute central piazza with a couple gelato shops. Its very easy to get to the autostrada - maybe 10 minutes from the house. We would love to return to the area and would definitely consider this property again.

'...We have been so delighted with your home and, most of all, your hospitality and generosity...(B.B. May 2007)'. '...Thanks very much for your warm hospitality. We are sure we will return to the Marche region...(B.J. June 2007)'. '...We are only sorry that we could only stay for one week! We have really enjoyed your company and hospitality...(P.L. A delicious cake and yoghurt...(M.M August 2007)'. Thank you so very much for such a warm and friendly welcome! We enjoyed our visit to Le Marche. We have stayed in 3 other villas in Italy (Tuscany, Emilia Romagna and Umbria) and yours was by far the most well equipped and best floor plan for a diverse group. We hope to return soon (K. R. may 17 /24-2008) 5/5 A plunge in the italian countryside
