Puglia - the Apulia of ancient times – is the jewel of the Mezzogiorno, the Italian south. Fought over and colonised by the Messapians, the Greeks, Romans, Normans and Spanish, it has passed through many hands in its turbulent history. Its culture and architecture demonstrate its importance as a crossroads of Mediterranean civilisations, Greek and Roman, East and West, Europe and Africa. The landscape and culture is definitely Mediterranean, and this is reflected in the relaxed lifestyle, the agriculture and the architecture.What you will find is a wealth of small towns to explore, each with their individual character and history. Here you will find Conversano, a town built around a Norman cathedral, towns like Cisternino and Ostuni with a maze of whitewashed alleyways reminiscent of a Moorish kasbah or a Greek town. Martina Franca has an eighteenth century elegance, and Alberobello boasts World Heritage status as the capital of the trulli. For cities Lecce is hard to beat. Dubbed the “Florence of the Baroque” this cultured city has a wealth of architecture on show, from a Roman theatre and amphitheatre to extravagantly decorated churches. The region’s capital, Bari, is also fascinating with a historical centre dominated by its evocative basilica devoted to the city’s patron saint St Nicholas (Santa Claus). The southern port of Taranto is full of south-Italian character. Puglia produces a high proportion of Italy’s olive oil, wine and wheat for pasta, and coastal regions are devoted to market gardening. This rich agricultural production makes it a gastronomic delight. A glory of Puglia is the length of its coastline, with many fine beaches on both the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, and the clean seas contributing a vast variety of fish and shellfish to the menu. Puglia gets close to 300 days sunshine a year with the warm weather starting in April and going right through until the end of October. The hottest months are July and August but with two seas around the area the air does not feel too oppressive during these months, especially as the property is located above the coastal plain. Spring and autumn is glorious- sunny and warm with wild flowers in abundance. Italians are unashamedly devoted to celebrating everything Italian - religion, food, wine... And they show it with festivals, filling the summer nights, celebrating everything from classical music to grapes. These family orientated events provide great free outdoor entertainment and gives you an insight into the wonderful hospitable Pugliese people. The hillside of Laureto overlooks the Fasano plain, an area of ancient olive groves, beautiful at any time of year but spectacular in spring, when the groves are filled with red and yellow flowers. The coast is nearby, with family beaches, the Fasano Zoo Safari park, and a new top-class golf course. The villa is within easy reach of the most fascinating towns of central Puglia - Alberobello with its UNESCO heritage trulli, the Baroque elegance of Martina Franca, the white cities of Ostuni, Locorotondo and Cisternino, the Norman centre of Conversano and the fantastic caves of Castellana Grotte. Although the Adriatic coast has attractive sandy beaches, a short drive will also take you to the Ionian sea. Day trips will take you further afield to other highlights of the region such as Lecce, the cathedral towns of the Bari coast and the Gravina countryside of Matera and Laterza. Bari and Brindisi airports, both within an easy hour's drive, are served by daily direct flights from London. |
