The Costa Calida/murcia region

The house is just a 5 minute drive from the beach at Punta Brava and Los Urrutias and 10 minutes to Isla Menores and Mar de Cristial. There is a market every Wednesday morning in the nearby large town of Cartagena and every Friday in El Algar and Llano de Beal.

Cartagena is only a 10 minute drive away and has shops, supermarkets, museums and archaeological sights. Superb shopping centre at Parque Meditterano. Great historic town. Regualr cruise ships now come into the harbour.

This area of Spain missed out on the tourist boom that hit the Costa del Sol and that means that its 155 miles (250 kilometres) of coastline are unspoilt and blissfully free of ranks of high-rise apartment blocks, forests of cranes and traffic jams. The Costa Cálida is a secret the Spanish have been keeping to themselves: they have been buying holiday homes here for generations so don't expect to find Red Lion pubs and cafés selling bacon butties. Many consider this to be the last bit of coast to offer a slice of 'real Spain' with its relaxed atmosphere and clean calm beaches. The World Health Organisation has declared Murcia province the cleanest in Spain, with the least industrial pollution.

For nature lovers, there is the stunning Sierra Espuña National Park and the Sierra de Carrascoy mountain range – a paradise for walkers and climbers.

If you are a sports enthusiast, there is the famous La Manga Club, the purpose-built 1,400-acre (566 hectares) holidaymakers' paradise with international- standard golf courses, equestrian and tennis centres and every leisure facility imaginable. There are 5 other golf courses within a 30 minute drive as well.

Take a dip in the renowned Mar Menor, Europe's largest saltwater lagoon, offering sailing, windsurfing, diving and jetskiing. The water is wonderfully shallow and is so warm that you can swim all year-round. And it 's good for you! The health-giving and healing properties of its high iodine concentration are believed to have great curative properties for rheumatism, arthritis and skin complaints.

For city life, you are also spoilt for choice. Murcia, the capital, offers a great flavour of the region's culture with its wealth of museums, monuments and sumptuous cathedral. Cartagena, the second largest city and a naval port, has a heritage to rival that of any European city as it was the last Moorish stronghold in Spain. There's also the historic town of Lorca with its medieval fortress.

Jazz lovers will have heard of the San Javier Jazz Festival that takes place every summer; and where better to hear "cool" music than in this beautiful warm climate!

Los Alcazares sits on the western coast of the Mar Menor, the Mar Menor is unique as few regions can boast of a salt water lagoon beside the Mediterranean Sea.

The Mar Menor lagoon has a 73 kilometre coastline offering lots of beaches with crystal clear, safe and calm water of which Los Alcazares is proving to increasingly popular with residents and tourists alike.

This safe stretch of water with a reported maximum depth of 7 metres covers a total area of 170m2, which makes it the the biggest salt water lake in Europe or as quoted by a famous swimmer “the largest swimming pool in Europe”.

History of the region

Most of the remains found along the coast of the Mar Menor date from Roman and Arab occupations, although the earliest settlements date back to Palaeolithic* times.

The Romans developed a major salt industry here, as did the Arab and Carthaginians as well. This was possible as they were able to transport it via the sea passages, at this time the Mar Menor was almost joined to the Mediterranean Sea, and allowed even large vessels as the Mar Menor was much deeper at that time. Its current appearance is said to date back to the last 1000 years, this is a recent development.

Underwater World of the Mar Menor

The Mar Menor is unique and there are species to be found that do not exist in other lagoons. This is partly due to the vegetation that lies on the mud and sand (famed for it therapeutic benefits) this muddy bottom was home to extensive colony of Sponges, which appeal to lagoon fish. Red and Grey Mullet, Meagre and Silverside are found in plenty. Bonefish and Blenny are to found in the hollows. Eel is also very common. We also have anchovy, prawn, sole, bass and bream. The best known and an important factor in the local economy is the Mar Menor King Prawn, found in the sandy bottom of La Manga. There are many crustaceans as any visit to the local fish shop or local supermarket will testify, especially Spider crabs. Oysters are also to be found on the sea shell sandy seabed

Cartagena EL CARMOLI area

El Carmoli, in the heart of Mar Menor, is a residential area where the customs and traditions of the fishermen who inhabited this village, are preserved, yet there is a full range of services close by.

There is a wide range of restaurants (Indian, Italian, English) and excellent nightlife in the neighbouring town of Los Alcazares, just four miles away (5 -7 min drive).

The location also offers a wide array of choice for leisure activities. Within ten minutes of El Carmoli, golf fans can play on any greens at the La Manga Golf Club. The Club has 3 golf courses, pools, shops, restaurants and hotels, and it is visited by several European football league teams for training sessions as well as relaxing breaks.

Enjoy the natural beauty of the Carmolí Marina Nature Reserve. A protected area positioned very close to the residential environment, a place to take in fresh air and relax.

In Mar Menor’s neighbouring area you can find Los Urrutias, Los Nietos, La Manga and Cabo de Palos, with a full range of services: restaurants, cinemas, schools, traditional markets and shopping centres. Only a few kilometres away from the modern and cosmopolitan cities of Murcia and Cartagena, the two main cities in the Region.

The small Spanish town of LOS URRUTIAS is a short walk (3 minutes) away. It has a grocery store, marina, local shops and a market on Thursday mornings.

A 5km drive takes you to LOS ALCAZARES, an old fishing town that has grown into a popular resort. Excellent shallow sandy beaches particularly safe for children as there are no tides or currents in the Mar Menor lagoon.

Also come here for shops, supermarkets, restaurants and bars.

CALBLANQUE Natural Park (12km) is a remote area of gorgeous sandy beaches backed by rocky hills accessible only by a dirt track. Well worth discovering!!

CABO DE PALOS (12 km) has a lighthouse and a lovely old harbour well known for its fish restaurants
The old Moorish cities of CARTAGENA (20km) and MURCIA (30km) are an excellent day trip for their shops, architecture and history (Roman ruins in Cartagena).

LA MANGA DEL MAR MENOR (15km) is the place to go for nightlife, shopping, water activities and great beaches.

BLUE FLAG BEACHES
The Mar Menor is a huge salt-water lagoon, the ideal location for all types of watersports and very safe for swimming. Its calm shallow waters are warm all year round and shelve very gently so it is ideal for small children. There is also a watersports centre, Aqua Adicta and offer Dinghy Sailing Lessons and Windsurfing Lessons and Kayak Safaris.

La Manga Club is only 10min away and offers a luxury spa, gym, world class golf, tennis coaching, football coaching and may other activities. Cartagena and Murcia are just a short drive away and both cities have much to offer with attractive architecture, cafes, restaurants and shop.

There are historic roman ruins in Cartagena. You can set foot in the Mediterranean 20 minutes away in La Manga. El Carmoli / Los Urrutias is central to everything. This location is perfect for active families as well couples on a romantic get-away.
Nearby are tennis courts, grocery store, cinema (Spanish) and only 5 mins to walk to the beach.
Plenty of night life can be found in Los Alcazares, a few minutes drive.

FREE LATE DEPARTURE TIMES, where possible you can remain in your accommodation until you need to leave for airport, you will be advised at the time of booking if we need an early departure time from you, we do not charge for this extra time.

DAYS OUTS, we can provide the 9 seater for days outs, shopping, water parks, city visits – Murcia and Cartagena have many interesting places to visit, or simply to beach and pick up later, or home from an evening out, all at very reasonable costs, these can be pre-booked prior to your arrival, recommended for July and August.

GOLFERS, we have several places on several golf courses, so if you have a party of 8, 12, 16, we can provide apartments on Roda Golf, La Torre Golf, and Hacienda Riquelme, others on request.

SECURITY PAYMENT, we ask for a security payment £200 to cover any accidental breakages or damages that can occur while on holiday, this is fully refundable less any costs within 2 weeks of departure date, this is by bank transfer.

PAYMENT, is by bank transfer, this can be in Sterling or Euros, we require 50% of total at the time of booking and remaining 50% within 8 weeks of travel date.

Where a discount has been offer for low occupancy, the full rate will apply for persons added after booking form received.

CHANGEOVER CLEAN/LAUNDRY, this is a charge payable locally, it is 65€ for 4 persons, additional 10€ per person to cover extra laundry, bed linen and towels.
