The Lombardy region

Bergamo is a lovely small town with a walled upper town. The train station connects you to all of Northern Italy with a day trip to Venice easily possible. Ideal also for a stay in Milan as the train goes every hour and takes about an hour. The surrounding mountains are also easily reached.

Bergamo Alps / Sandrio bergamo city centre area

The town of Bergamo has several art galleries, lots of churches, a lovely historical walled inner city and a football team in Seria A, and tickets are easily available for all attractions.
