| Home description |
Le Petit Maine, is a small, rural hamlet situated in “sunny southwest France” on the Charente/Dordogne border close to the very pretty medieval town of Aubeterre. Here you will find our traditional Charentaise farmhouse and 2 gites, Le Petit Paris and La Petite Alsace, set amongst 5 acres of French countryside. Whilst holidaying here, you can relax in the privacy of your gite’s own patio facilities or the swimming pool, play areas and sheltered dining area where guests can enjoy an evening meal served by Le Petit Maine's hosts. Wherever you choose to relax at Le Petit Maine, you will enjoy magnificent uninterrupted southerly views.
The countryside, culture and cuisine of this area invites those seeking rest and relaxation, at the same time there are activities available that would appeal to the most energetic of adults and children. Spend time enjoying local markets, winetasting, cycling, canoeing and swimming at the riverbeach of Aubeterre and Brossac lake or visit nearby Angouleme, Bordeaux and Cognac. Le Petit Maine's prime location also allows visitors to reach the seaside areas of Royan and caves of the Dordogne.

Le Petit Maine is ideally located in the Charente which is documented to be at the centre of a micro-climate offering the second sunniest part of France with mild winters and a generally temperate climate.
Whether you choose to enjoy cuisine and fine wines or participate in the French custom of cycling, canoeing or bathing by the rivers and lakes, we hope you have the time to explore the places of interest which are easily accessed from Le Petit Maine.
Angouleme, Cognac, Bordeaux and Bergerac are all close by and famous for wine routes, architecture and French ambience.
For something different, visit Angouleme's annual vintage car rally, Cognac's world famous annual jazz & blues festival, Chalais's international showjumping competition, Aubeterre's monolithic church or 'Le tour de France' if in the area.
A beautiful drive through the vineyards of Cognac takes you to Royan, our closest seaside resort with a bustling harbour and large clean beach, neighbouring the larger resort of La Rochelle. Across the nearby Dordogne border you can find the Caves of Lascaux with Europe's best known prehistoric cave-art or closer is the beautiful town of Brantome with an abundance of restaurants & a large grassy area by the river for picnics.
Around the area, local villages and towns host markets and fetes throughout summer where a tradition to be enjoyed are the 'evening producteurs markets'.
Culinary specialities of the region include Foie gras which is made by a nearby nationally-renowned producteur along with many other types of pate and terrine to try, including wild boar (Sanglier). On the road to Aubeterre you can also find a Walnut Oil producteur, who welcomes sampling. A Sunday tradition of the sale oysters from high street stalls can be enjoyed for a remarkably reasonable price. All seasonal fruits and veg are plentiful at the local markets.
Our local, liquid, speciality is Pineau de Charente – a blend of grape juice and young, fierce Cognac, drunk as an aperitif, ice-cold, and then a bit later with food. Vineyards offering tastings are well signposted around the region. There are also 2 local small independent breweries, offering interesting flavoured beers.

Le Petit Maine's closest town Montmoreau is a 5 minute drive where all facilities such as supermarket, market and restaurants can be found.
Chalais -10km - is a larger town with a busy traditional Monday market selling all French crafts & regional food specialities that you would hope to find. For a special evening meal visit the renowned Chateau with dungeon restaurant.
15km away is our closest picturesque town Aubeterre. Officially classed as one of France’s prettiest 100 villages and one of the most photographed in France. Balconied medieval houses line the narrow streets of Aubeterre, which lies on the ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Stunning, underground 5th - 12th Century Eglise Monolithique (Michelin starred) hewn out of the rock under the castle, other churches, chateau, lots of restaurants and bars.
Other activities are; Sunday market with traditional oyster sellers, Fishing, Floodlit tennis courts, Golf, Puppet theatre for children & Horse-riding from large stables near river beach. During the summer months there is traditional French music in the main square in the evenings. Festivals and firework displays are also held throughout the summer.
We highly recommend an afternoon spent on the river beach, swimming or bathing. Canoe hire is available here, where you can leave your car and be taken upstream by minibus for a paddle back with occasional stops for swimming and picnics. Or soak up the atmosphere of the caf

Further details outdoors: Once a farm, Le Petit Maine Gites are set in its own grounds of lawned areas, fruit trees and 5 acres of level land, lending itself to uninterrupted views of fields of sunflowers, wheat or maize. The 10m x 5m pool is shared by both gites, allowing families to mix and play together. Owing to the vast area of our grounds, the play areas of badminton, football, boules, swings, sandpit and slide are conveniently located in the grassy, garden area without being intrusive to the private patio facilities of each gite where garden furniture and BBQs are located.
The sheltered area by the pool transforms into a 'Bistro' where as an alternative to self catering, we can offer our guests a fixed price set evening menu, which is freshly prepared and home cooked with regional ingredients.
The menu changes daily and is available 6 evenings per week.
Choose dining as a family or benefit from knowing your children are settled and safe in their beds.
